Every beach we cover that welcomes dogs, organized by leash rules and seasonal access. Always check the specific beach page for current policy before you go.
Off-Leash Dog Beaches
These beaches allow dogs off-leash in designated areas. Uncommon and worth knowing about.
Matapeake Beach & Dog Park
Off-leash policy: Off-leash permitted in designated dog beach area. Must be under voice control.
Downs Park
Off-leash policy: Designated off-leash dog beach. Leash required elsewhere.
Dewey Beach
Off-leash policy: Dogs allowed before 9:30 AM and after 5:30 PM in summer. Off-leash permitted with Dewey Beach dog license. Year-round dog access otherwise.
Quiet Waters Park
Off-leash policy: Off-leash dog beach and fenced dog park on-site; leash required elsewhere.
Virginia Beach Oceanfront
Off-leash policy: Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend: dogs banned from sand and water between Rudee Loop and 42nd Street; leashed dogs allowed on the Boardwalk 6 a.m.–7 p.m. Off-season: dogs allowed on the beach off-leash and on the Boardwalk leashed anytime.
Sandbridge Beach
Off-leash policy: Summer (Memorial Day – Labor Day): dogs allowed on the beach before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m., leashed or under voice control. Off-season: any time, off-leash under voice control.
Wells Beach
Off-leash policy: Dogs prohibited 8 AM – 6 PM, June 16 – September 15. Leashed-only April 1 – June 15. Off-leash permitted at other times outside the June 16 – Sept 15 daytime window per town brochure.
Long Sands Beach
Off-leash policy: Dogs prohibited 8 AM – 6 PM, May 20 – September 20. Off-leash sunrise – 8 AM (under voice control); leashed 6 PM – sunrise during summer.
Nauset Beach
Off-leash policy: Dogs prohibited on the main public beach April 1 – Labor Day. Off-leash (voice-controlled) day after Labor Day – March 31. Leashed dogs allowed year-round on the ORV section south of Trail #1 (max 30-ft leash).
Nags Head Beach
Off-leash policy: Dogs allowed year-round on a leash (max 10 ft). No off-leash voice-control window; owners must clean up.
Kitty Hawk Beach
Off-leash policy: Leashed year-round; voice-control off-leash permitted in shoulder hours during summer.
Duck Beach
Off-leash policy: Dogs may be off-leash on the beach year-round under owner voice control. Elsewhere in town (boardwalk, Duck Trail, parks), leash max 10 ft is required.
Corolla Beach
Off-leash policy: Dogs allowed leashed year-round; no off-leash permitted on Corolla beaches per Currituck County code.
Folly Beach
Off-leash policy: Dogs prohibited on the beach 10 AM – 6 PM, May 1 – September 30. On-leash only at all permitted times (no off-leash voice-control provision per Folly ordinance). Pier is always off-limits to dogs.
Isle of Palms
Off-leash policy: Dogs allowed leashed year-round; off-leash with handler voice control permitted 5 AM – 9 AM April 1 – Sept 14, and 4 PM – 10 AM Sept 15 – March 31.
Sullivan's Island Beach
Off-leash policy: May 1 – Sep 30: dogs allowed on the beach only 6 PM – 10 AM (off-leash 5 AM – 10 AM, on-leash 6 PM – 5 AM); prohibited 10 AM – 6 PM. Oct 1 – April 30: off-leash 5 AM – noon, on-leash noon – 5 AM. Town dog license required.
St. Simons Island Beach
Off-leash policy: Memorial Day through Labor Day, dogs prohibited 9 AM – 6 PM between 16th St and Mallery St (East Beach south to pier). Otherwise off-leash year-round if under immediate control; 10-ft leash if not. Clean up required.
Neptune Beach
Off-leash policy: Dogs allowed leashed (max 12 ft) year-round per Ord. 2023-05; off-leash swimming permitted in the ocean only.
Atlantic Beach
Off-leash policy: Dogs allowed leashed (max 12 ft) year-round; in-water off-leash with owner permitted.
Longboat Key Beach (Bayfront Park Access)
Off-leash policy: Dogs not allowed on Longboat Key beaches per Town Code Sec. 92.04. Leashed (8-ft max) dogs OK at Bayfront Park and Joan Durante Park; off-leash inside the fenced Bayfront Park Dog Park.
Lido Beach
Off-leash policy: Dogs prohibited on the beach, in the park, and at the pool. Brohard Beach Paw Park in Venice (~30 min south) is the only off-leash dog beach in Sarasota County.
Bonita Beach (incl. Bonita Beach Dog Beach)
Off-leash policy: Bonita Beach Dog Beach (north of New Pass bridge) allows off-leash dogs (max 2 per visitor). Main Bonita Beach has no dogs. Pick up after pets.
Gulf Shores Public Beach
Off-leash policy: Pets prohibited on Gulf Shores sand beaches year-round (not seasonal). Off-leash dog beach at Lake Shelby in Gulf State Park year-round.
Coronado Beach
Off-leash policy: Designated dog beach at the north end (Coronado Dog Beach, near Naval Air Station, across from Sunset Park) — off-leash, year-round. Main beach prohibits dogs.
Del Mar Beach
Off-leash policy: Dog Beach at the north end (north of 29th St). Off-leash voice-control day after Labor Day – June 15; June 16 – Labor Day off-leash only dawn – 8 AM, leashed remainder of day.
Long Beach (Alamitos Beach)
Off-leash policy: Designated Rosie's Dog Beach (Belmont Shore) — leashed/off-leash zones. Main beach prohibits dogs.
Carmel Beach
Off-leash policy: Dogs allowed off-leash year-round — one of the few off-leash beaches on the California coast.
Baker Beach (San Francisco)
Off-leash policy: Dogs allowed leashed; off-leash voice-control permitted in designated north end.
Ocean Beach (San Francisco)
Off-leash policy: Dogs allowed off-leash voice-control in most sections.
Cannon Beach (Haystack Rock)
Off-leash policy: Dogs allowed off-leash under voice control year-round. Leash required around Haystack Rock Marine Garden to protect nesting birds and tidepool wildlife.
Long Beach (Washington)
Off-leash policy: Dogs allowed leashed; off-leash voice-control permitted on the beach itself.
Ocean Shores
Off-leash policy: Dogs allowed leashed on the main beach. Designated off-leash Dog Beach south of the Taurus Beach Approach.
Montrose Beach (Chicago)
Off-leash policy: Montrose Dog Beach is Chicago's only legal off-leash lakefront beach (fenced). DFA tag required ($5/year via Chicago Park District).
Bradford Beach (Milwaukee)
Off-leash policy: Dogs prohibited (service dogs only). Nearest off-leash dog parks: Estabrook Park, Granville Park.
Topsail Beach
Off-leash policy: Dogs allowed year-round. Leashed (max 20 ft) May 15 – September 30; off-leash under voice command October 1 – May 14. CBRS Unit L07 area requires leash April 1 – September 30. $100 fine for violations.
Oak Island Beach
Off-leash policy: Leashed (physical leash, no e-collars) required March 16 – October 15. Off-leash allowed October 15 – March 15 from 6am–8pm at marked beach accesses under voice/visual control. $100 first violation, escalating.
Litchfield Beach
Off-leash policy: Georgetown County: dogs must be leashed 9am–7pm. Outside those hours, may be off-leash if under voice control. $250 fine for violations.
Manzanita Beach
Off-leash policy: Off-leash allowed under direct voice control year-round (Oregon beach rule); leash must be carried.
Rockaway Beach
Off-leash policy: Leash recommended; off-leash voice control allowed on Oregon beaches.
Cape Lookout State Park
Off-leash policy: On 6-ft leash on the beach. Off-leash allowed on the beach north of the campground.
Cape Perpetua Scenic Area
Off-leash policy: On 6-ft leash in developed sites; off-leash voice control on USFS land outside developed areas.
Bandon Beach (Face Rock)
Off-leash policy: On 6-ft leash near the wildlife refuge rocks; off-leash voice control on open sand.
Gold Beach (South Beach Park)
Off-leash policy: Off-leash voice control on Oregon beaches; leash in parking and city park areas.
Harris Beach State Park
Off-leash policy: On 6-ft leash in the park; off-leash voice control on open beach.
Ocean Beach (San Diego)
Off-leash policy: Off-leash Dog Beach at the north end is open 24/7. Elsewhere, leashed dogs allowed before 9 a.m. and after 6 p.m. (Apr–Oct) or 4 p.m. (Nov–Mar).
Avila Beach
Off-leash policy: Off-leash voice control allowed before 10 a.m. and after 5 p.m.; no dogs 10 a.m.–5 p.m. except service animals.

Fire Island National Seashore — Watch Hill
Leashed dogs allowed on most NPS beaches year-round EXCEPT during piping-plover nesting closures (roughly Mar 15 – Labor Day on posted stretches).
Ogunquit Beach
Dogs prohibited on Ogunquit Beach April 1 – September 8. Leashed only September 9 – March 31. Year-round ban in the Ogunquit River Estuary.
Carolina Beach
Dogs allowed on the beach April 1 – September 30 only before 9 AM and after 5 PM (leashed). Year-round leash required. Prohibited entirely on the Boardwalk District.
Jekyll Island Beach
Dogs allowed leashed year-round on most of the beach (max 16-ft leash). Prohibited between South Dunes Picnic Area and 2,000 ft NE of St. Andrews Picnic Area. No on-duty lifeguards — swim at your own risk.
Amelia Island Beach
Dogs allowed leashed year-round on most of the beach.
St. Augustine Beach
Dogs allowed leashed year-round on most of the beach.
New Smyrna Beach
Pets prohibited on the main beach. Designated dog beach at Smyrna Dunes Park (north end of the island); leashed (max 6 ft).
Vero Beach
Pets prohibited on lifeguarded beaches (South Beach, Humiston, Jaycee). Leashed dogs allowed at Sexton Plaza.
Jupiter Beach
Dogs allowed leashed year-round on a designated 2.5-mile stretch of Jupiter Beach — one of South Florida's few dog-friendly beaches.
Haulover Beach Park
Designated dog beach between towers #2 and #3, daily 8am–4pm; access via lots #3 and #4. Leashed elsewhere in the park.
Sombrero Beach
Leashed dogs welcome. Owners must pick up after pets.
Anne's Beach
Leashed dogs allowed at all times.
Cape San Blas (Salinas Park)
Leashed dogs welcome on all Gulf County beaches (except inside St. Joseph Peninsula State Park). 20+ pet waste stations along the public accesses.
St. George Island
Dogs allowed leashed on the public beach. Designated dog beach at the east end of the public area. Prohibited in state park beach.
Honeymoon Island State Park
Dogs allowed (leashed, 6-ft) on the designated pet beach at the south tip and the Pet Cove Trail. Not allowed on the main swimming beach.
Sanibel Island Beach
Dogs allowed leashed on most Sanibel beaches.
Orange Beach
Pets prohibited on the Gulf beaches of Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, and Perdido Key year-round (service animals exempt).
Dauphin Island Public Beach
Dogs allowed leashed year-round on most beaches; prohibited at West End Beach. Clean up required.
East Beach (Galveston)
Dogs allowed leashed year-round (max 6-ft leash, clean up required).
Galveston Seawall
Dogs allowed leashed on the seawall walkway and on most stretches of the public Seawall beach (no separately-managed beach park gates).
Crystal Beach (Bolivar Peninsula)
Dogs allowed leashed year-round.
Surfside Beach (TX)
Dogs allowed leashed year-round; vaccination tags required.
Mustang Island State Park
Dogs allowed leashed year-round (not in swim areas or buildings).
Port Aransas Beach
Dogs allowed leashed year-round.
South Padre Island Beach
Dogs allowed leashed year-round on most of the beach (Isla Blanca near the jetty has restrictions).
Padre Island National Seashore
Leashed dogs (max 6 ft) allowed year-round, including on driving beaches. Prohibited at the Malaquite Pavilion, boardwalk, and adjacent beach in front of the Pavilion year-round (not seasonal).
La Jolla Cove
Dogs prohibited at the cove year-round.
Imperial Beach
Leashed dogs allowed year-round south of Imperial Beach Boulevard. Prohibited between IB Blvd and Palm Ave, and on the pier.
Newport Beach
Dogs prohibited on the beach 10 AM – 4:30 PM year-round (not just summer). Leashed access at other hours, max 6-ft leash.
Huntington Beach (Surf City USA)
Designated Dog Beach at the north end (Goldenwest to Seapoint) — leashed, no time restrictions. Main beach prohibits dogs.
Leo Carrillo State Park
Dogs allowed leashed at the north end of the beach (north of lifeguard tower 3). Prohibited at the southern lifeguarded area.
Pismo Beach
Dogs allowed leashed on the city beach year-round; pier excluded.
Pfeiffer Beach (Big Sur)
Dogs allowed leashed.
Monterey State Beach
Dogs allowed leashed.
Santa Cruz Main Beach
Dogs prohibited on the Main Beach year-round (24/7) per Santa Cruz Municipal Code 8.14.

Dogs allowed on a 6-foot leash on the beach and trails; not allowed inside park buildings.
Boca Chica Beach
Dogs allowed on leash; standard Cameron County beach rules apply.
Matagorda Beach
Dogs allowed on leash on the beach and at Matagorda Bay Nature Park.
Ferry Beach State Park
Leashed (4 ft) in the park year-round; not allowed on the beach April 1 – September 30.
Sandy Point State Reservation (Plum Island)
No dogs at Sandy Point (year-round). Parker River NWR also prohibits pets.
Surf City Beach
Dogs allowed year-round but must be leashed at all times (leash max 20 feet). Owners must clean up waste; bags provided at accesses.
North Topsail Beach
Dogs allowed year-round but must be leashed at all times (leash max 25 feet). Owners must remove waste immediately. $100 fine.
Emerald Isle Beach
Dogs allowed year-round but must be leashed at all times (max 16-ft leash), including in the surf zone. $50 civil fine for violations.
Indian Beach
Carteret County rule: dogs must be leashed (max 6 feet). Not allowed in any lifeguard-protected swim areas during beach season.
Mokuleia Beach Park
Dogs allowed on-leash on the full beach.
Nehalem Bay State Park
On 6-ft leash. Dogs prohibited March 15 – Sept 15 in the snowy plover management area on the south spit.
Hug Point State Recreation Site
Direct voice/sight control required; leash must be carried.
Jessie M. Honeyman Memorial State Park
On 6-ft leash.
Westport Light State Park

Leashed dogs welcome on the beach (tribal land — not subject to ONP no-dogs rule).
Hobuck Beach
Leashed dogs allowed on the beach (tribal land — confirm at resort for camping areas).
Empire Beach (Lake Michigan Beach Park)
Dogs permitted on leash. Owners must clean up.
Cave Point County Park
Dogs allowed on leash. Owners must clean up.
Edgewater Beach (Cleveland)
Westernmost portion of the beach is dog-friendly (on-leash). Dogs prohibited on the main swim beach.
Sims Park Beach (Euclid)
Dogs allowed on leash on park grounds. Owners must clean up.
Hamlin Beach State Park
Dogs prohibited on guarded swimming beaches. Permitted on the two unguarded beaches east of Area 1 and in front of Area 5. Leash max 6 ft, current rabies certificate required.
La Jolla Shores
Leashed dogs allowed before 9 a.m. year-round, and after 6 p.m. (Apr 1–Oct 31) or after 4 p.m. (Nov 1–Mar 31).
Cardiff State Beach
Leashed dogs (6 ft) allowed at Cardiff Reef and Seaside lots south of Tower 16, 6 a.m.–11 p.m.
Cayucos State Beach
Leashed dogs allowed at all times.
Pacifica State Beach
Leashed dogs allowed.

Dogs permitted only in the off-season, or with time-of-day restrictions. Check rules before visiting.
North Beach
Dogs allowed on the boardwalk but not on the swimming beach Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Ocean City Beach
Dogs permitted on beach and boardwalk Oct 1 - Apr 30 only. Banned during season.
Colonial Beach
Dogs prohibited on beach and boardwalk April 1 – September 30. Leashed dogs allowed Oct 1 – March 31.
South Bethany Beach
Dogs prohibited on beach May 15 – Oct 15. Leashed off-season with cleanup required.
Broadkill Beach
Dogs allowed Oct 1 – Apr 30 on leash (6-ft max). Prohibited in-season.
Buckroe Beach
Dogs prohibited east of 1st St (beach, boardwalk, greenspace) May 15 – Sep 15. Leashed off-season. Never on the playground.
Asbury Park
Dogs prohibited on beach/boardwalk Memorial Day – Labor Day. Allowed on boardwalk off-season with leash.
Belmar
Licensed leashed dogs permitted Oct 1 – Apr 30 only. Never on the boardwalk in-season (except crossing to beach).
Spring Lake
Leashed dogs permitted on beach off-season only.

Dogs allowed on Hampton Beach only before 8 AM and after 6 PM, Memorial Day – Labor Day, leashed. Permitted any time, leashed, Labor Day – Memorial Day. NH State Beach properties (the state park section) prohibit pets entirely May 1 – Sep 30.
Jenness State Beach
Dogs prohibited on Jenness State Beach year-round. Adjacent town-owned portions of Jenness Beach allow leashed dogs sunrise – 9 AM and 7 PM – midnight in summer (Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day); Saturday restrictions apply.

St. Simons Island Beach
Memorial Day through Labor Day, dogs prohibited 9 AM – 6 PM between 16th St and Mallery St (East Beach south to pier). Otherwise off-leash year-round if under immediate control; 10-ft leash if not. Clean up required.
Fort Myers Beach (Lynn Hall Memorial Park)
Dogs not allowed in Lynn Hall Memorial Park. Leashed (non-retractable, 6-ft max) dogs allowed on the wider Fort Myers Beach sand outside the park; owners must pick up waste.
Gulf Shores Public Beach
Pets prohibited on Gulf Shores sand beaches year-round (not seasonal). Off-leash dog beach at Lake Shelby in Gulf State Park year-round.
Padre Island National Seashore
Leashed dogs (max 6 ft) allowed year-round, including on driving beaches. Prohibited at the Malaquite Pavilion, boardwalk, and adjacent beach in front of the Pavilion year-round (not seasonal).
