A 14-mile barrier island at the mouth of Mobile Bay — Civil War-era Fort Gaines, the Estuarium, and the quieter Alabama Gulf alternative. The west end is private/residential; the public beach and Audubon Bird Sanctuary are at the east end. Migratory bird hot-spot in spring and fall.
