About It's a Beach Day

It's a Beach Day answers one question for every beach we cover: is today a good day to go?

We pull live data from authoritative public sources — NOAA for tides and water temperature, NDBC offshore buoys for open-water conditions, the National Weather Service for forecasts, alerts, and Surf Zone Forecast rip-current risk, the EPA for UV index and AirNow air quality, and state environmental agencies for swim advisories — and combine it into a single beach-day score. Every beach gets its own page with a full conditions dashboard, tide chart, dog rules, parking, and amenities.

What we aren't

We aren't a travel blog, we aren't a chamber of commerce, we aren't a booking site. We don't write "10 Best Beaches" list-icles or accept payment to rank beaches. The only thing that determines where a beach shows up in our daily ranking is the live data.

How it's built

The site is a statically generated Astro site hosted on Cloudflare Pages, rebuilt on a scheduled cadence so conditions stay fresh. All data sources are public APIs. We don't store personal data. There is no newsletter signup pop-up. There is no cookie banner because we don't use cookies. This site is maintained by 137 & Co.

Coverage

The site currently covers 500 beaches across 29 states: Maryland (75), Florida (63), California (51), Hawaii (37), New Jersey (28), Delaware (22), New York (21), North Carolina (20), Virginia (19), Massachusetts (19), Oregon (17), Texas (14), Washington (14), Pennsylvania (13), Michigan (13), Maine (11), South Carolina (10), Illinois (9), Rhode Island (6), Connecticut (5), Mississippi (5), Ohio (5), New Hampshire (4), Georgia (4), Alabama (4), Wisconsin (4), Indiana (3), West Virginia (2), Louisiana (1).

Coverage expands as we add beaches with verified coordinates, NOAA tide stations, and (for ocean beaches) the nearest NDBC offshore buoy. Data layers — weather, forecasts, alerts, air quality, rip current risk, tides, water temperature, and wave height — are nationally configured and pick up new beaches as they're added.
