Lanikai Beach – The Best in the World

Lanikai beach is on Oahu’s southeastern coast, and has been ranked as one of the world’s most beautiful beaches, along with neighboring Kailua Beach. The aquamarine waters, smooth white sands and gently swaying palm trees epitomize South Pacific Paradise. There are even times you can be there by yourself. Of course, when the wind is up, the hordes of energetic windsurfers quickly dissolve any fantasies of being marooned on a tropical island.

Still, most of the time, the beach is fairly quiet, and even when it’s not, one must gape a bit at the natural beauty of it. Note: As with all Hawaii beaches, conditions are changeable. Check with the lifeguards or locals before entering the water, and always use caution. Lanikai, which translates to “Heavenly Waters,” is a beachside community, with exclusive Lanikai villa and condo rentals sitting on a reef-protected turquoise-blue bay. Right next door to Kailua Town, the two communities together offer the best Oahu has to offer, without the hassle of crowds. You’ll find a variety of activities in the area, including swimming, sunbathing on soft white sand beaches, snorkeling and diving, sailing, hiking, and golf. Kailua Beach is known as one of the best beaches for windsurfing on the islands.

There is also a wide range of lodging, unique dining experiences, shopping at boutiques and markets. All of this and you are just twenty minutes away from the Honolulu Airport and the beaches of Waikiki! For the utmost in Hawaiian relaxation, Lanikai offers visitors a place where the past peacefully resides with the comforts of the present.

You might want to kayak out to the offshore Mokulua Islands. Lanikai Beach has the best view of these twin islands, which are recognized worldwide. The Mokulua Islands are about one half mile off the shore of Lanikai. These islands house many birds such as the I`wa, as well as provide a destination for fun recreational activities such as surfing, kayaking, snorkeling and paddling. Only Moku Nui, seen on the left as you face them from Lanikai Beach, is open for landing. Visitors are restricted to the beach so as not to step on the many seabird nests. This gorgeous island has a superb beach, an impressive double mountain, and stunning offshore views. Its somewhat smaller twin, Moku Iki, is almost its spitting image, but officially landing on it is not permitted (bird sanctuary). You can rent a kayak from a rental “van” across from the park. The water is clear so you can see the sand and corals underneath you. We saw a turtle surfacing from a distance. There’s a couple of islands near Lanikai that you can kayak to. We only kayaked to one island to rest and ate some snacks. It was a bit tricky to get back in the water but if you are not afraid to get wet and jump back into the kayak, it’s do-able.My husband and I waited until the last day of being at our rental property on Oahu to visit Lanikai – big mistake! Had we gone there on the first day, we would have spent every day there! This is the most beautiful beach I have ever seen. For sure, the best on Oahu. The sand is soft and fine, the water is warm, calm and clear, it is very quiet and secluded.

Family Vacation Ideas – Need Some Suggestions? Here Are 6 Affordable Places for Families to Visit

There is no need to feel stressful about your upcoming family trip. There are so many fun, safe places to take the kids and grandparents these days. If anything, everyone might have some different ideas of where they want to go. Kids have different interests depending on the age and personality. Get the family together to create a list of places and begin narrowing down the results. Here are a few family vacation ideas and recommendations to help you get started.

US Vacation Destinations

Washington DC

Many of the attractions, including the museums, are absolutely free to visit. Visiting the Museum of Natural History can be a very fun AND educational experience for children since there are dinosaurs! Since the hotels, unfortunately, do have a reputation for being a bit pricey, you can lodge in one of the nearby cities like Annapolis or Arlington.

Myrtle Beach, SC

This is one of the least expensive beaches to visit on the Atlantic Coast. It can get crowded, so try visiting off-season if possible. To save money, book a room without an ocean view. You will be seeing it every day anyway. Spend the evenings having family fun at a mini golf course or bowling alley.

Portland, Oregon

Head to the Pacific Northwest for some spectacular (and affordable) fun. There are plenty of hotels in Portland that run less than $100 a night. Visit the Oregon Zoo, or go exploring a submarine. Get everyone’s lunch from a Food Truck and pick up some snacks at the Farmer’s Market.

International Family Vacation Ideas

Baja California Sur, Mexico

If you want to try the last-minute thing, this is a good choice. Airlines frequently offer last-minute discounted flights (to Cabo San Lucas), and there is no shortage of all-inclusive family resorts in the area. It’s easy to find airfare + hotel packages for 5 nights.

Dublin, Ireland

Here is a large city with infinite charm. Take a budget airliner like Aer Lingus Wow Air, or Norwegian Air. You can cut out costs on ground transportation with a Dublin Pass. For some family fun, head to the Dublin Zoo and Dublin Falconry.

Bali, Indonesia

As long as you can fly out of New York or Los Angeles, Bali can be an affordable vacation for the entire family. There are many kid-friendly activities, like the Elephant Safari and Bali Bird parks. For kids who enjoy waterslides, you can visit Waterbom Bali park and Splash Water Park. And, of course, there are plenty of exotic beaches to enjoy.

These are a few examples of fun places to visit for kids and adults of all ages. Once again, get everyone together to create a list of family vacation ideas, do a bit of research, and compare prices. Hopefully, everybody will be able to agree on where to go and what to do.

Beach Vacation Tips

When planning your family vacation to the beach, the costs can quickly add up. You and your family need a place to stay, food to eat, things to do, and the list keeps on growing. In today’s economy, people are always looking for small ways to save big money, and it is possible to achieve this while still making the most of your family’s beach vacation. The following are a few money saving tips for your next beach trip.

-Manage your meals: Most portion sizes at restaurant are far larger then what you can comfortably finish. Try splitting a meal or finding a restaurant were children under a certain age can eat for free. Make sure to do some research and take advantage of coupons or restaurants that offer certain specials on certain days. If you are going to be at the beach for a week, it is simple to plan your evening meals around the nights that specials are offered at specific restaurants you’d like to try.

-Make your own food: Consider heading to the grocery store on your first day at the beach and purchasing some lunch time items. By making your own sandwiches and having your own snacks, you not only will save money, but you will save your time. If you have a lunch that can be packed, you can spend the day enjoying the beach and the ocean without having to get dressed and spend time finding somewhere to eat lunch.

-Make use of what you pay for: Instead of paying for your entire family to spend the day at the water park, instead make use of the resources that you have already paid for. In other words, use the pool at your hotel or condominium. It will more then likely be less crowded then a water park pool and you can pack your own lunch to take with you.

-Find the best deals for attractions: Many attractions have deals when you purchase passes for multiple days or multiple attractions. Find a deal where the passes can be used at any time or on any day, so that your days are not dictated by the limits of the attractions or passes and you and your family are free to do what you want when you want to.

-Don’t buy junk: If you are traveling with children, you may run into the issue of the children wanting to own every boardwalk store item that they can put their hands on. Set a limitation before you leave and let each child know what amount they are allowed to spend during that week. Stick to the limits and you will not only teach your child the value of money, but also won’t end up coming home with a car full of beach toys.

By following these tips and doing a small amount of research before your trip, you can help to make your money go a long way. Through taking a little extra time to prepare, you will have a great beach vacation experience without burning a hole in your pocket.
